Professor Dong Zhao is Deputy Director of the Beijing Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood Vessel Diseases, and Director and Professor of the Department of Epidemiology at the Institute, and at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University.

Professor Zhao graduated as a medical doctor from Sun Yat-Sen Medical University of Guangzhou in China, and after her training in epidemiology at the Medicine Postgraduate Institute of Peking Union Medical College and the Institute, she worked at the School of Public Health at the University of Texas in Houston and held the position of Research Fellow at WHO and University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. In 2003, she received her PhD in epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases.

Professor Zhao currently serves as Vice Chair of the Chinese Society of Chronic Disease Prevention, is a member of the National Expert Committee of CVD Prevention and Treatment for the Chinese Ministry of Health, and is a board member of the Chinese Society of Cardiology and Vice Chair of the Women’s Cardiology Association. She is currently serving as Vice Chair of the Asian Pacific Association of Preventive Cardiology (2013–2015), and has been a member of the International Subcommittee for the AHA Scientific Program Committee since 2011. Professor Zhao is also a member of the Scientific and Policy Initiatives Committee of the World Heart Federation, a member of the Executive Board of the International Atherosclerosis Society, and is a member of both the working group for WHO Guidelines for CVD Multiple Risk Factor Control in Developing Countries and for the working group for China National Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Dyslipidemia and Hypertension. Finally, Professor Zhao is a member of the Editorial Board of the Chinese Journal of Epidemiology and Chinese Journal of Cardiology, and is a board member on Nature Review Cardiology.

Academic Achievements

· In a 21-year study on CVD trends among a large, defined population in China, Professor Zhao and her team observed the long-term changing patterns of epidemics of CHD and stroke, which included a decreasing rate of the incidence of hemorrhagic stroke and increasing rates of ischemic stroke and CHD, and increasing epidemics of new metabolic risk factors in addition to uncontrolled classical risk factors. The findings highlight the importance of the prevention of ischemic CVD in the next several decades and also the necessity to consider not only hypertension but also cholesterol, obesity, diabetes and smoking among the Chinese population.

· Through a 20-year follow-up study of close to 30,000 individuals across 11 provinces of China, Professor Zhao and her team established an individualized risk assessment tool for the Chinese population. Together with her team, she also provided evidence for the establishment of clinical criteria in the diagnosis and risk stratification for hypertension, dyslipidemia and obesity, which have been adopted in several national and international guidelines.

· Based on a vast quantity of multi-dimensional data, Professor Zhao and her team established several macro-predictive models and policy models to identify quantitatively the unique patterns of CVD epidemics in different socioeconomic periods of the past, present and future, and provided scientific support for evidence-based decision-making processes for CVD primary prevention in China.

· Using a nationwide registry study, Professor Zhao and her team studied the gap between guidelines and clinical practice in China and barriers in CVD secondary prevention, and provided important information on the quality of care to provide guidance for how to reduce recurrence rates and improve quality of care.

Professor Zhao and her team have published more than 260 papers in both English and Chinese journals.

Professor Zhao has assisted in the development of three international guidelines and five national guidelines.
