The year 2020 is very unusual, but “the inherent difficulty of reform entails extraordinary courage, and only persistent efforts befit this commendable cause”. In the face of the severe and complex international situation, the arduous domestic reform task, development and stability, especially the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Beijing Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood Vessel Diseases the Institute, under the leadership and support of the competent authorities at all levels, continues to strengthen the public welfare nature as a health science research institution, deepens the reform of the operation mechanism and management system, strengthens the construction of key disciplines and innovation platforms, promotes the comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development as a medical institution, and plays an essential leading role in promoting the development of medical technology in the Capital.

During the epidemic, the institute actively cooperated with Beijing Anzhen Hospital in the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus. All staff participated in the epidemic battle, carried out various tasks such as nucleic acid testing, sample reception, supply guarantee, garbage disinfection, and comprehensive coordination, with full enthusiasm met the most challenging work.

At the same time, the institute focuses on the combination of basic research and translational applications, based on major scientific issues and clinical needs of cardiovascular diseases, explores early risk precaution and diagnostic markers of diseases from the molecular etiology and pathophysiological perspectives, and promotes precise molecular classification, and then develop new diagnostic and therapeutic materials and methods, to gradually establish lab tests that serve clinical practice.

The institute insists on hosting high-level, high-standard and substantive international academic exchanges and cooperation, and attaches great importance to inviting top scholars for academic activities. The“Wu Yingkai Precision Medical Research Series Academic Lectures” were carried out for 11 academic lectures during the year. A number of scientific forums were held, as well as international cooperation projects with many countries.
