Department of Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering to biology and medicine. In the category of engineering science, using theories and methods of engineering, biology and medicine, biomedical engineering investigates the frontiers of life science and medicine, and provides advice for disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering was established in 1998. The Department’s main research includes the development and clinical application of a ventricular assist device (VAD), biomechanical mechanisms of left ventricular remodeling reverse, prediction of biomechanical models for the cardiovascular circulatory system, biomechanical mechanisms of coronary atherosclerosis, medical image registration and interventional surgery navigation.
During the past several years, the Department has undertaken a number of national and regional projects, including China’s National Ninth Five-Year Plan, the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Beijing Natural Science Foundation, to name a few. The Department has published over 90 research articles. As the PhD graduate and postgraduate education base of the Biomedical Engineering major at Capital Medical University, the Department has trained eight postgraduate students.
The Department’s team has accumulated a wealth of experience in VAD trials, including implementing the first survival test of the third-generation blood pump implantation in China, and has taken charge of three sub-projects of the 863 Program. As for biomechanical analysis, the team is trying to optimize approaches to cardiovascular disease treatment using a mechanical mechanism, and is now leading a project of the Beijing Natural Science Foundation as well as a project of the Capital Health Research and Development Special Fund. The team has also made progress in medical image registration and interventional surgery navigation. As the Principal Investigator, the team is directing a project for the National Natural Science Foundation of China and a project for the Beijing Natural Science Foundation.
